THE IGNIGHTINGALE STORY
These tiny birds found their way into my imagination thanks to a pair of House Wrens who took up
housekeeping in my shop a few spring seasons ago. I noticed two tiny wrens building a nest in a box of
junk high on a top shelf in my studio. They had found a gap in a large sliding door that allowed them to
enter even when closed and I suppose they found a sense of security there. I watched with great interest
as they came and went, first constructing the nest, then hatching the eggs and feeding the peeps. During
that time we became very comfortable with one another. The day finally dawned when the fledgling babes
were meant to leave the nest. One by one I watched as each diminutive chick stood on the precipice and
launched itself into the vastness of the world. One after another took to untested wings as the proud
parents closely monitored the progress of each until finally four of them had successfully departed out the
open shop door and disappeared into my garden to forage on bugs I suspect. I thought that was the whole
brood until a fifth baby appeared at the edge of the nest. Clearly the runt of the family, this bewildered little
fellow stood at the edge of the nest but could not muster the courage to make the fateful leap. The parents
took up closer locations in my shop to encourage the little guy, but he stood there for a good 20 minutes
or so unconvinced that this was something he really wanted to do. I was seated not 10ft away at my work
table watching with great interest when all of a sudden the baby wren launched itself into the great
unknown and after flapping it's tiny wings madly, promptly landed on my left arm. Both of us were equally
bewildered....he looked at me and I at him and without further fanfare he took off and joined his brothers
and sisters in my garden. The next morning I created my first Ignightingale and I have been making them
since always mindful of that brave little wren. -S.W. Cawood
